The Science

What Is
Photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive therapy that uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular repair and reduce inflammation in retinal tissue — without injections or surgery.

The Valeda Light Delivery System delivers precisely calibrated wavelengths of near-infrared and visible light to the retina, targeting the mitochondria in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells to support their function and slow disease progression.

Targets the Retina

PBM light reaches the macula and RPE layer — the area most affected by dry AMD — to stimulate cellular energy production.

Stimulates Cellular Repair

Specific wavelengths activate mitochondria in retinal cells, boosting ATP production and reducing oxidative stress.

Non-Invasive Treatment

No injections, no surgery. Patients simply look into the Valeda device during a brief, comfortable treatment session.

Research-Driven Care

Currently, his research is focused on ocular imaging, artificial intelligence in disease detection and treatment on dry AMD/geographic atrophy.

Understanding Dry AMD

Dry AMD & Geographic Atrophy

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50. The dry form — including its advanced stage, geographic atrophy — involves the gradual breakdown of retinal cells in the macula, the central region responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

Unlike wet AMD, dry AMD has historically had limited treatment options. Photobiomodulation represents a promising, non-invasive approach to supporting retinal cell health and slowing the progression of this condition.

Through research, Dr. Lalezary strives to advance the field and deliver state-of-the-art care to patients — including cutting-edge tools like the Valeda system for eligible dry AMD patients.

The Treatment Process

What to Expect

01

Step 01

Consultation & Evaluation

Dr. Lalezary will review your retinal imaging and medical history to determine if photobiomodulation is appropriate for your stage of dry AMD.

02

Step 02

Treatment Sessions

Each session involves looking into the Valeda device while calibrated light wavelengths are delivered to your retina. Sessions are brief, painless, and require no anesthesia.

03

Step 03

Ongoing Monitoring

Advanced ocular imaging is used to monitor your retinal health over time. Dr. Lalezary uses AI-assisted tools to track disease progression and treatment response.
